  • 2 medium medium-sized onions Can be replaced with large mushrooms or zucchini for variation.
  • 1 cup flour Whole wheat flour can be used for a healthier option.
  • 1 teaspoon paprika Customize with cayenne pepper for added heat.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs Panko works great for extra crunch.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Begin by peeling the onions and cutting off the top and bottom.
  2. Place them cut-side down and carefully slice a few layers down, being cautious not to cut all the way through to keep the onion's shape.
Batter Preparation
  1. In one bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. In another bowl, beat the egg.
  3. In a third bowl, place the breadcrumbs.
Coating
  1. Dip each onion into the flour mixture, ensuring they are fully coated.
  2. Next, dip them in the beaten egg, and finally coat them with breadcrumbs.
Cooking
  1. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spray the basket with cooking oil spray to prevent sticking.
  3. Place the blooming onions in the air fryer basket, ensuring they’re not overcrowded.
  4. Spray the tops with cooking oil and cook for about 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Carefully remove them and serve with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge and consume within 3 days. To reheat, place them back in the air fryer for a few minutes. Uncooked, breaded onions can be frozen individually before placing in a zip-top bag.
